Recently, 24 new firefighters began serving Elk Grove, Galt, and surrounding communities after graduating from the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department Academy on Friday, Aug. 20.
This moment was six months in the making for the firefighter/paramedics and firefighter/EMTs who endured an intensive 24-week training program at the Cosumnes CSD Fire Training Facility located in Elk Grove.
The recruits’ journey began in November 2020 with more than 700 applicants vying for a position in the state-accredited fire academy. Every recruit came to the academy with extensive background knowledge in the emergency medical field and a paramedic or EMT certification.
Every day at the academy, the recruits were put through a rigorous testing and evaluation process. They participated in physical training, mastered skills they will need in the field and completed over 50 tests including a 200-question midterm and final exam. They have been trained to the highest standards and are ready to serve the community in time of need.
As these firefighters hit the line, the fire department added one additional paramedic engine and one additional paramedic ambulance to its daily response resources. The new engine and ambulance will be assigned to Fire Station 77 when it opens next year in southeast Elk Grove. Until then, the additional units will respond from existing fire stations to improve response times across the District.
“The addition of highly-trained firefighters and the implementation of Engine 77 and Medic 77 will significantly help us meet the demands of our growing community,” said Fire Chief Felipe Rodriguez. “We are proud to welcome these 24 firefighters to our public safety team and I trust they will provide courteous, timely, and effective service to our community for many years to come.”
