What is Therapeutic Recreation?

Therapeutic Recreation uses recreation services and leisure experiences to help people with disabilities increase their physical, mental, emotional and social abilities. Therapeutic Recreation contributes to a healthier mind, body and spirit. Participants can learn new skills and/or modify old ones, get involved in community recreation programs, feel a sense of accomplishment, and increase their independent functioning levels.

Mission:

The mission of the Therapeutic Recreation Section is to provide and facilitate recreational program services for people with disabilities.  The program serves persons with disabilities of all ages and ability levels in inclusive and adapted recreation activities.

Therapeutic Recreation Program Goals:

  • To promote:
    • independent leisure functioning.
    • self-confidence and self-esteem.
    • the development of social skills.
  • To provide:
    • opportunities to engage in leisure programs that meet participants' specific needs.
    • opportunities to develop new leisure skills.
    • inclusion opportunities for participants in traditional recreation programs.
    • program activities which emphasize a participant's abilities.
    • opportunities for enjoyment and fun!
