BIOGRAPHY Bryan Miles was a dedicated member of the community who lived, worked, played, and shaped the quality of life in Elk Grove during its early years. He was born in 1908 in Jefferson City, Missouri and moved to California with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Buel B. Miles, in 1915. The family settled in the Alta Mesa area on a poultry and dairy ranch. In 1927, Bryan married Violet McGuirk, and had two children, Myrna and Gary. When the Great Depression hit in the 1930´s, Bryan worked on ranches and played semi-professional baseball to support his family. He obtained a job at the Sheldon Grocery Store, which was located on Grantline Drive. Bryan assumed ownership of the Sheldon Grocery Store in 1937 and also took over the Red and White Store in 1941.

Bryan Miles was a savvy business man. He and Lester Beach founded the Elk Grove Business Men´s Club in 1949, now known as the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce. Bryan Miles possessed a love for the game of baseball which inspired him to serve as a coach for local youth baseball teams and for the local parks agency. From 1946-1959, Bryan Miles was a Director on the Elk Grove Recreation and Park District Board of Directors. His involvement with the district led to the development of a baseball diamond in Elk Grove Park and the formation of local baseball and softball leagues.
