The CSD Parks and Recreation Department holds many fun-filled events each year, but did you know that there is a hardworking team of people dedicated to creating these events? Meet one of those team members: Heather Shortino, Recreation Coordinator and 12-year veteran in CSD Special Events!
Making memories and creating smiles is what Heather loves most about her job. She says, “Being able to see the happy faces of children and families at events makes my job satisfying.”
Heather leads several large-scale events and manages logistics, vendors, and the Kids Zone area for the annual Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin Festival. Heather says the Giant Pumpkin Festival is her favorite event. “This event creates community and I love how the entire CSD comes together to make it all happen.”
Heather has always appreciated the value of recreation programming. Since the age of four, Heather has played a variety of sports, including soccer, softball, synchronized swimming and she attended many summer camps as a kid. She says, “Parks and recreation played such an important role in my life that it inspired me to pursue a degree in Recreation Administration from California State University, Sacramento.”
In her spare time, Heather loves traveling to the beach. Her family’s tradition is to visit Santa Cruz every year and she hasn’t missed a year yet. The love of her life is her 7-year-old daughter who keeps her on her toes and focused on what is truly important in life.
